Impact of Climate Change: New Grape Varieties

Seminar Format

Full-Day Online Seminar

What It's About

Climate change is omnipresent and particularly affects viticulture. Traditional grape varieties can no longer cope with the climatic conditions, causing existing grape variety "zones" to shift. Newly bred varieties are being cultivated, and so-called "historical" varieties—those grown a hundred years ago—are making a comeback.

Objectives

Seminar participants will learn which new PIWI grape varieties, as well as historical ones, are currently available and how to distinguish between them. In practical tastings, wines from these different varieties will be sampled, and the theoretical background will be presented in an accessible manner.

Content

  • Introduction: How does climate change affect viticulture? Which measures can generally be implemented?
  • How will viticulture and the range of grape varieties change?
  • Which regions and grape varieties benefit from climate change?
  • How does the changing climate influence the selection of grape varieties?
  • Which “new” grape varieties exist in general?
  • What are “PIWI grape varieties”? What are their respective characteristics regarding location, growth, and sensory profile in the wine?
  • What are “historical grape varieties”? What are their respective characteristics regarding location, growth, and sensory profile in the wine?
  • How can these grape varieties be marketed in retail? What opportunities do they offer in the hospitality industry?
